  • Reducing the size of your Powerpoint presentations

On a surprisingly regular basis, I get requests from users who want to send Powerpoint-presentations via email, but are stopped because the presentations are too big. 30 MB isn’t uncommon, and just the other day, I had someone with a presentation of a whopping 75 MB.

  • TBT: FileZilla – the only FTP client you’ll ever need.

This post originally ran in October 2008. I am reposting it now, as part of my throwback thursday project, to give some of my older quality posts some love. I still use FileZilla on a regular basis, and still love it dearly.

  • MS Excel: Create PDF of active worksheet

I recently had a user call in and ask me how he could export the contents of a single worksheet to PDF while working in Microsoft Excel 2010. As I told him, that is a simple feat to achieve. Here is how: (more…)

  • Hiding the scroll bar in Word

So, you’ve minimized your menu ribbon. Now, let’s get rid of that pesky scroll bar. You’ve got a perfectly good scroll wheel on your mouse, and just don’t need it. It’s simple; here’s how:

  • Hiding the Office Ribbon menu

For most of my time as a computer user, my main text editing tool has been Microsoft Office. I have grown accustomed to using, and even sort of liking the ribbon menu. However, as I often work on a laptop with its severely limited monitor real estate, I needed to find a way to hide it when I am not using it. Luckily enough, that is very simple.

  • Outlook: Delegate sending permissions

Last week I showed you how to send as a different address. You might also want to allow someone else to send on behalf of you. Here’s how:

  • Outlook: Recall a sent message

Here’s the scenario: You’ve written an email, hit send, and then realized that it shouldn’t have been sent after all, for whatever reason. It may be rude, embarrassing or contain classified information. One way to go, is to issue a recall for the email in question. Here’s how:

  • Changing the default template in Microsoft Word

A while back, I had a user ask me how he could change the default template in Word. I realized that it had been so long since I had done anything of the sort myself, that I needed to look it up. Finding that this was something I had not documented, I decided to do so. The information below relates specifically to Word 2010 on Windows 7, but it should work for later versions, too.

As I have written previously, the default template used by Word is dictated by a file called Normal.dotm, located at C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. In order to modify it, simply do as follows: (more…)

  • Did you know that the FotoStation Dialog Builder displays field numbers?

When using the Dialog Builder, FotoStation now shows you the IPTC field numbers of the fields placed in the editor:

This can be particularly useful when creating a dialog for a heavily customized metadata configuration, with many custom fields.

  • Clearing FotoStation Quick Search history

FotoStation stores all searches made in Quick Search, displaying previous searches when a new search is made. You may, however, want to clear this history. This is done differently on the Windows and Mac versions.

On the Windows version, open the File menu, choose Preferences, then Clear quick search history.

On the Mac version, click on the arrow next to the magnifying glass in the Quick Search field and choose Clear.

  • Downgrading to a previous version of FotoStation

As a FotoWare Customer Support Engineer, one of the issues I see on a somewhat regular basis, is that users have installed the most recent version of FotoStation, without having a valid license for that version. Simply put, if so, they will not be able to run FotoStation. On Windows, you simply uninstall the new version, install the version for which you have a license, and, as they say, Bob’s your uncle. On a Mac, however, you need to also remove the .bom and .plist files before you can install the version. Here’s how:
