  • Apple Numbers: Controlling rounding

While I use Excel at work, I tend to use Numbers (part of the Apple Productivity Apps suite) at home. I have sheets that do a number of different things, most of them rife with macros and automatic functions. From time to time, I need to ensure that the result of a function either overstates or understates a result. This cannot be achieved when using the SUM function, so a different function must be used. Luckily, Numbers provides you three functions to achieve just this (as, I would assume, does Excel). They are called ROUND, ROUNDDOWN and ROUNDUP. Their syntax are the same:

  • MacOS: Resolve “Where is FinderSyncAPIExtension?”

Since a software update some time ago, my Mac has been asking me “Where is FinderSyncAPIExtension?” with irregular intervals, and always following a reboot:

  • When in doubt, reboot

A common occurrence when contacting IT support, is that you are requested to reboot the computer, to see if that helps. From time to time, users are reluctant – or even unwilling – to do so, and ask why. The reason is very simple; experience has shown me, and many other IT professionals, that reboots help. Here’s a few examples from a single day at work: (more…)

  • Which camera drone – a look at the changed market

Funny, isn’t it, when a new product, which changes the market arrives, another – from a competing brand – is not far behind? So, too, with camera drones (although I might add that the topic of this discussion came about a fair bit sooner than I had thought). At any rate, following GoPro’s announcement of the Karma drone (which I covered last week), DJi announced their new drone, the Mavic, which is specced and sized to compete in exactly that segment; small drones that easily pack into a backpack. Before I get into it, let me just say that I have not actually interacted with either, but I have read a fair number of articles on either, and base my comments on those. (more…)

  • GoPro Karma: First thoughts

I have made no secret of the fact that I like what GoPro are doing in the action camera market, and my thoughts on the GoPro Hero  Session are here. I was very excited to hear, as I did a few weeks ago, that they would launch their own drone, to compete with DJI and the other manufacturers of camera drones out there, not least because I have been thinking about getting one of my own.

  • Reviewed: Bose QC 35

When I replaced my Bose QC 15 with a pair of QC 25 last year, I reviewed them here on the blog. They recently started acting up. Rather than have them repaired, I paid the difference, and took home a pair of QC 35.

  • Outlook 2013: BCC in meeting requests

I had a user call in, who was unfamiliar with Office 2013, having only worked with previous versions of Office, and wanting to know how they could add a BCC recipient to the meeting request.

  • Outlook: Text turns to chinese characters when forwarding bounceback

Some time ago, I had a user call in with a bounceback issue. They had sent us a screenshot of the bounceback, informing us that the email became illegible when they tried to forward it to us. I called the user up, remote controlled her computer, and had her demonstrate the issue, and sure enough; when she hit forward, all text turned to chinese (or chinese-looking) characters:

  • Excel: Quickly remove blank cells

From time to time, Excel worksheets fill up with blank cells interspersed among the content. While the judicious use of whitespace can be useful, it may also make reading the worksheet somewhat challenging. Luckily, Excel has a tool to help us get rid of the blank cells. Here’s how: (more…)

  • Changing it up, yet again

I know that it has been a very short time indeed since I last changed the theme, but I have not been completely happy with Latte, either. In particular, the fact that it has too much white space on either side of the posts when viewed on a large monitor has bothered me, but also the size of the header image, neither of which can be changed on Latte.

  • Resolving Error 1312 when mapping a folder on a network share

Some time ago, I was talking to a user on the phone, while remotely controlling their computer. I needed to connect to a folder on a network share as my admin account, rather than that of the logged-in user, but kept running into the following error: (more…)
