Taking screenshots in Mac OS X

My fiancée has been using a Mac for close to a year now, and it’s a pretty nifty machine, I’ve gotta say. However, things are fairly different to what she, and I, are used to. One thing she does fairly often, is take screenshots, which she had a bit of trouble with until we figured out how.

The problem, of course, is that Mac OS, unlike Windows, does not have a dedicated key on the keyboard for taking screenshots. Instead, they use hotkeys. The hotkeys and their effects are as follows:

Hot-key Result
Cmd-Shift-3 Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop
Cmd-Shift-4, then select an area Take a screenshot of an area and save it as a file on the desktop
Cmd-Shift-4, then space, then click a window Take a screenshot of a window and save it as a file on the desktop
Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-3 Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it to the clipboard
Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-4, then select an area Take a screenshot of an area and save it to the clipboard
Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-4, then space, then click a window Take a screenshot of a window and save it to the clipboard

Personally, I like the attitude that it should be handled with hot-keys, rather than with a dedicated key on the keyboard; it removes a bit of clutter from the keyboard, without sacrificing the function.
