Every so often, a customer will call in, saying that they are unable to access one of the servers that are mapped through their login script. There are generally two reasons for this; either there’s an issue with the network connection, or the drive letter is already being used for another device. To troubleshoot the issue, then, we start by confirming that the computer is online, and then have the customer log off and back on again. ‘
If the issue persists, we need to have a look at Disk Management. Because my end users are not local administrators, I add a couple of steps to run it as a local admin. If they are, feel free to skip to step Here’s how:
- Open the start menu
- Write
CMD
- Right click the icon for Command Prompt, and select “Run as administrator”
- Log in with your admin credentials
- In the command prompt window, write diskmgmt.msc
- In Disk Management, find the disk, and right click on the partition
- Choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths”
- Set a different drive letter than the one your login script uses
That should see you sorted, and once the user has (again) logged off and back on again, they should see the drive as expected.
